Surely this job isn't just over minimum wage? I've been an engineer for over 6-7 years. Fabrication, welding and machining along with steel erecting and a bit of mechanical fitting along with pipework etc also. But I'm bored of it now and fancy a change, I'm on 13 an hour right now. No private health care and a basic pension.

I have the intentions of getting on a machine like a forwarder after a few years if I am lucky.

I guess “Engineer” has such a huge scope and and as such such a varying salary and perks. When I was in the office it was pension, car, private health cover and a whole raft of other incentives. Hated the office though.

Have you asked around to see what you’d be on per day/hour? Might be worth checking. If you’re having to fork out for your own PPE, tools and equipment you’ll have to cover the cost and maintenance time after work off of the days wage. When you hear about climbers on £150 a day it blows my mind. What’s a cutter gonna be on?

Aye sorry. I know what you mean, I'm on the tools. Around here you start at 100 a day (which is my daily wage right now) and then up to 170 for local work apparently. Completely self employed/everything paid for out of that wage.

Cutter would be on £100-150 depending on daywork or price work. My day rate is £250 and booked up for ever if i want it.

If you’ve a bigger picture in mind, ie the a forwarder and the cash set aside to start a business like that up then why not? You should maybe ask around to see if there is a demand for another player in the game before committing. I’d be asking myself why have those who have been in that game for years not already filled that gap in the market?

Maybe because they’re slogging their guts out for minimum wage? 🤣

No I mean getting my forwarder ticket and driving it for someone else. I'm as green as the grass with this forestry stuff but only learning from what I see online.

You don’t think the queue to get in a nice warm comfy seat is a mile long? I suspect you’ll be at the end if a very long pecking order.

I've known a few boys who have paid for their own tickets and got straight onto a machine. I don't mind spending two or three years on a saw out in the piss wet if that's what it takes I guess.

If you're a good hand cutter then they won't want you to get in the machine- any fat **************** can do that.
