550xp woes

My 505xp ain't a happy bunny. It's taking forever to start (if it does at all) and I think the compression is low. Is the lifting with the pull cord a reliable way to test the pressure? I read that if I lift slowly just with the cord, it should be able to support the saw and not just un wind. True story? My saw stays on the floor and the cord just unwinds.

 

Right now the saw popped on second pull, but then has refused point blank to go any further. 

 

If the compression is low, I'm assuming it's a leak from somewhere/something. any suggestions as to what to start with would be really useful before I take it in to somewhere!

Take the exhaust can off and have a look at the piston through port for any damage .

Sounds terminal, as Stubby said muffler off and check the exhaust face of the piston through the open port, any sign of scuffing and the cylinder needs coming off to assess the damage, is it a mark 1 or mark 11 ?

Sounds low on compression, relatively common. A new piston and a bit of work on the bore would probably bring it back.

The poor man's compression check sort of works but prefer a proper test.

Thanks for that. I've just watched a you tube video and can handle that! This feels like it is going to get expensive...

I have woes every time I use my 550.... don't get me wrong it runs allright and starts OK.... I just hate the thing 😆

any comments or opinions on a 550 that struggles in use?

bought it 2nd hand, often runs down as if its running out of fuel, sometimes slow when starting, needs careful work with the throttle to warm up

apparently no fault codes on it
