Chain Filing Angles

I was just wondering what top plate angles you guys use? Ie 30 deg being a fairly standard angle but do you guys vary either way or choose your angles depending on the wood you are cutting eg hard/soft? I am assuming 30 was chosen as an average to cover general use but I am aware some manufacturers quote 25 or 35. I realise its not critical as long as you keep consistent so I guess my question really is do people bother.

Angle is manufacturer and chain dependent- I generally read the information on the box and go with that. You can change things for hardwood or softwood, but I usually leave the top plate angle alone

I always sharpen at the recommended angle, 28° in my case, it does make a difference on most chains. It will vary depending if it's full or semi chisel.

 

Only change I make for softwood is lowering the depth guages slightly.

Had a tinker with my regular Oregon chain for the processor (21LPX) which is supposed to be 25degrees. Gave it a a go at 30 but the tip noticeably blunted faster

25 degree man me . Take rakers down a tad more if its soft wood .

What chain though? My square ground is at 10 and 25 would just be too aggressive

All my chains are either 25° or 30°, so whatever's specified. Most of them have the wear limit line on the cutter tooth so easy to tell.

 

Sometimes i file at the wrong angle because i'm an idiot and i stick the magnetic guide on the wrong way.
