I’d rather take it off green than cut and wait for it to die turn to hard ,brittle dusty nightmare....start at the top and roil it down and it falls off under its own weight and is supple enough to manipulate around branches than when it’s rock hard and dead .

Used to de-ivy trees a lot in London last century, I find it’s very much like making love to a beautiful woman

Start at the top with a tool like a big flat heat screw driver, as you work down it gets easier and easier, til you get to the main trunk and it come off in large sheets as the weight of the upper stuff does its work, then you’re done, exhausted but sated, with a newly naked trunk in front of you.

That’s possibly one of the most peculiar metaphors imaginable.

“main trunk” and “peeling off in large sheets” are not terms Id normally associate with a passionate experience with a beautiful woman.....

That’s not to suggest that big Mary from Camborne isn’t beautiful in the eyes of some beholders...

Oh - forgot the point of the post - forget chemicals, just pull more off than grows each year.

(equally applicable to Ivy and Mary)

If you are in no major hurry, just cut the stem and walk away. Wait a month, then pull it down.
If you need it done now, then cut the stem a month ago.
Using chemical is pointless, but I would say that because I'm a smelly hippy.
I think longer than a month, closer a year or 2 ime

Cheers Mick - although I’m not sure about your lovemaking technique if it involves a screwdriver.. ;-) !!

I find this can and cannot be the case. Sometimes ivy will pull off fine and orher times it can grip on very very strongly, especially around branches and unions.

Be careful when using tools such as screw driver or crow bar, that you do not damae the bark.

Good luck, it can be very infuriating

You've stopped your medication again, haven't you?
