First Cut

Look at work Tuesday and home owner was cutting grass when I turned up and then another on Friday but he is ex-footballer so likes his grass.

Minus 4 here this morning, not cutting the grass here. Our hedgehogs are just out and about, so keep it long for them.

If it is dry enough and long enough then cut. No such thing as first cut or last cut in my book. An early cut in Feb saves so much hard work in April when there are so many other jobs to do!

 

Completely agree. If it will take a cut without churning it up, get it done. For all we know it could rain for a month at any time and then it will be a jungle when we do our first cut.

When i was looking after 100 acres with 1 apprentice there was some 4 acres of grass under parkland oaks that used to grow like stink. I used to pick a nice frosty day in February and take the 10' roller to it. It would look lovely and striped once the sun came out and the top of the grass would burn off much faster than mowing and no clippings to get rid of. Very sandy soil so i know it would not work everywhere!

It’s definitely growing here (Warwickshire). One old doris round the corner was doing her grass at the weekend. Not found my mower yet after the house move. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it!! ;-)
