Black smoke after MOT

A mate of mines got a 56 plate 2.2 Transit tipper, after PASSING its MOT/emissions test he was driving it the 3-4 miles home from the garage when it started smoking, black smoke, a lot of it. Coincidence, or something to do with the emissions test?

Probably coincidence. It's not impossible that a connection to the turbo has been disturbed, if there is a leak in the induction side the engine overfuels and produces lots of black smoke under acceleration (think battleship "laying smoke") .

 Fingers crossed that's what it is as it is a cheap/quick fix.

It will get revved to the limiter for the emissions test. If its no been revved hard in the last year its maybe just clearing out all the reek thats built up.

This was my thought, the truck doesn't go far and my mate is a plodder. Also, due to Covid it got a 6 month extension for the MOT, so not been tested for 18 months.

 

I just thought it would have cleared over a 3-4 mile journey home, but I'm no mechanic.

Ahhh the old "snap the cambelt" MOT test where they rev the tits off it. If he pottles around then it probably had oil in the intercooler that it's sucked up or its finally now split a boost pipe. Black smoke is too much fuel/not enough air. Popped pipe/buggered injector is likely. The 2.2 is a cambelt iirc? The MOT rev the bolocks off it test had caused some engines with a shite cam belt to skip a tooth.

This is definitely a 2.2 and has a chain rather than belt, I spoke with @Ratman earlier he's given me a few things to look at, but us being us we will try blanking the EGR first and see if it stops smoking after an Italian tune-up.

Check air cleaner pipe has not collapse inside.

Yes, we know it's excess fuel/lack of air but why straight after the MOT?

 

We can blank the EGR for around a fiver, that will be the first try. Ratty suggested the DPF but I'm not sure the early MK7's had one, I'll give it a look.

 

I'm still of the mind revving the knackers off it for the emissions test started this, well, I'm hoping so for his sake.
