We bought a newish Redrow house last year simply because it ticked the boxes on size and location.

There is currently a gas fire in the living room which we want to swap out for a wood burner.

We have had a decent quote to supply and fit a Stovax Riva, but because of the existing fireplace (which is actually limestone, not Chinese plastic), the company have suggested a ‘cassette’ stove is the way forward (this is basically a stove set into the fireplace, so there’s no sides or top).

I’m happy enough with the look of it all, but they have suggested a 7kw stove?

The room is approx 4m x 5m with a bay window and the house is basically built out of Celotex.

Am I going to be sat around in my skidders when the fire is on?

I have no experience of cassette stoves whatsoever.

Our 5kw Chesney in the old house could pretty much heat the whole place, and the living room was bigger.

Thanks for any input.

It’s Saturday, I’ve popped my first can, so please feel free to stray completely off topic.

I think Mark that the inset stoves don't punt out as much heat as a free standing stove , not initially anyway but of course this has a absolutely no bearing on you sitting around in yer skidders bud .   ?

Think you will roast!

Ours is 7 or 8 kW and can heat a medium sized barn conversion with below modern regs levels of insulation.

Is it on an outside wall or internal? Just if its on an outside wall I guess a fair bit of heat will be lost to outside certainly more so than  a free standing stove.

It is on a brick gable end wall mate, so maybe they have taken that into account?

They’re a pro company, they did our last install.

We have a 4.9Kw Stovax Riva, they come in a number of sizes to fit in to typical "Builders Openings", It is an Inset stove and we have run it for 16 years and only replaced one baffle and the rope..once.

It is pretty warm and you can feel the benefits throughout the house. I haven't sat around in my undercrackers to date but it does get pretty warm - I guess the room size is circa 14' X 24' or thereabouts.

Ventilation is via a 450w subwoofer and opening the window!!! The neighbours haven't complained.....yet!!!

On a serious note, what's the output of your existing gas stove in kW?

And how many clothes do you have left on with if you have it on full blast?

There did seem to be several reviewers of the suggested stove complaining by the lack of heat but that may be down to their house and install.
