Electric drill with speed setting low is not to bad, but agree when it catches you definitely  know about it.

I wot i thought he meant - pic of yr intended job @gobbypunk ?  Forstener bits are not as directionally accurate as those dowel cutters in deep cuts, but do roar out the wood. K

These cut round tenons, you would use an auger bit to cut the round mortise for them. A forster wouldn't work unless you were using a jig to hold the drill at the perfect angle as, like you said, they are not directional.
