those veritas power tenon cutters go up to 2inch, probably take some holding though,the inch ones will spin your arms off when they catch.

Electric drill with speed setting low is not to bad, but agree when it catches you definitely  know about it.

I wot i thought he meant - pic of yr intended job @gobbypunk ?  Forstener bits are not as directionally accurate as those dowel cutters in deep cuts, but do roar out the wood. K

These cut round tenons, you would use an auger bit to cut the round mortise for them. A forster wouldn't work unless you were using a jig to hold the drill at the perfect angle as, like you said, they are not directional.
