Company near me runs a lot of ford 7840 and a couple of 8340.

Only thing I don't like about the 40 series is all the electrics and switches etc, big filters and wiring all exposed underneath.

That said I have just bought a turbod new Holland 7840 to replace the mf399....

In comparison thought he 399 has a fuel tank up top on front so weight over front wheels. Next to no electrics and nothing really on show to rip off.

40 series need some decent guarding underneath! I'm going to have to do something to mine for when mulching!

Think most of his are the basic model what ever they call it, he uses them on forwarding trailers and some have loaders and winches fitted for cricket bat willow felling.

Another vote for zetor, I run a 94 plate 7245 for winching and it's almost perfect.

Sure footed on slopes, good on fuel, parts are cheap, narrow enough for backing up rows, maintenance is DIY able

Only bad point is brakes but probably addressed on newer models

Cheers for all the replies

I have been looking at the case tractors, which seem to fit the bill quite nicely.

Not sure what they would be like for forestry stuff, although won't be major Forestry work

Meant more for just been able to stop on the hill when traveling at about 2 mph.

We solved it by dropping the winch at the rear or the front end loader as required.
