Hello, I am in my second year of an arboriculture degree. I am doing some research into the public demand of clients/customers for an arboriculture business that produces no greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. I would be deeply grateful if you could all fill out the survey linked below and help me get some results for a potential dissertation project. Thank you, Jacob Croasdale.

Survey doesn't really seem targeted to the experience base on here... I would happily make changes towards a low emissions business but of course I'm not going to employ an Arb firm, I have one...

Clearly reaching net zero would be impossible due to the removal of carbon sinks, as you say, as well as vehicles and machinery. Remedying this simply isn't possible with most people's business models. In order to lower net emissions we'd need to drastically change both how we operate in the industry and possibly more importantly the expectations of clients.

Removal of timber and brash would need to stop to avoid the large vehicles emissions. But it would also need to be spared from wood stoves and bonfires. We'd essentially be requesting clients turn their gardens in to habitat piles.

Now, I'm all for that. And with rural clients it's quite common for them to be fully on board with leaving arisings on site in some form, without chipping, to allow them to slowly degrade. But that's a luxury only practical to those wealthy enough to have enough space to hide it. Clearly that isn't so desirable for many urban clients/those without enormous gardens.

Just some thoughts.

No public demand. The public just want the tree gone and they don’t care how. Some will say, oh how wonderful, when you show them your battery saw, but they won’t pay extra.

you might be able to win some trendy urban council work when they have a budget to spend up but that’s about it.

Thought you were doing a degree in arborculture, not Greta studies...

But even if u go all battery powered unless u have 100% renewable electricity u still have emissions.

Really customers would be better getting local companies to do local work u'll cut far more emissions from wasted journeys.

Possibly more relevant on ur big contracts, when I was on railways we travelled all over UK and was not unusual to travel 3-4hrs each way for 1 night shift

Agree the survey isnt suited for arborists.  Also agree with what your trying to promote and i think we could all make our business a little more green if we tried which is a positive step forward but we have our limits. First question is a little simplistic for my liking - arboriculture is a much wide array of just removing carbon sinks using fossil fuels. Take into account planting,  surveying,  pruning,  bracing, propogation, woodland management  all important aspects of Arb too!.

I use alkylate petrol, bio oil and cordless.

Clients have no idea what im talking about.

They only care about

the price,

how long will it take,

and if you'll do a good clean up after.

So in answer to your question:

A: No. Most clients are not interested in the emissions of your business.

B: Yes. They probably should be.

Good luck
