Hi all,

How much should I be looking to pay for a HiLux level load? Stores are getting low and I need to replenish. Local chap last year charged £80, it hissed a bit but burnt okay once it got hot enough. That was ash and beech (so he said). Expect his prices will have gone up at least a tenner this year (they did last year, apparently due to increased fuel costs. He lives two miles away...)

Any locals want to quote? I'm a couple miles outside Glastonbury.

I'm happy to cut and split to length if it saves some cash.

Buy a moisture meter from maplins or on the net for about £20, when the logs are delivered split a couple in half then check moisture which should be about 20/25% if he is selling them as seasoned!

Lately Ive been at jobs where people have had logs delivered and they have been freshly cut and they have paid top money for them.

I think you will find he was on about the fuel to fell, extract, transport, cut, split, stack & load it more than the delivery cost.

My thoughts exactly... after a day of doing all of the above people just dont realise the work involved .. transporting the logs to site .. processing .. moving them to store.. store for a year... bring them out of store and deliver .. £80 waaayyyyy to cheap for all that work.

good seasoned h/w logs will now be at a premium,£90 a cubic yard is not too much for the work involved in my opinion, folk just don't understand the costs and investment while seasoning involved.

I know somebody who delivers down your way for the same kind of money, or slightly more, as you have been paying, it will be well seasoned hard wood, PM if you are interested.

I have worked out nobody will ever orders their logs 9 months before they need them because most people dont have cash. They leave it till the night before they need them then rob peter to pay paul . In the future if you take credit cards it will work in your favour. If you order your logs in the middle of January when its -5 they are going to hiss and spit.

Am I going to invest £10,000 in cord wood in the summer in the hope the wind does not blow all the trees over in october or some one steals it or sets fire to it NO.

If customers took a load or two in summer the whole industry would work more efficently and possibly cheaper.

i sell cut, split, and seasoned for 12 mths hardwood, £ 75 for 1.5 cubic meters. people turn there noses up and then buy 2 cube of fresh conifer for £100 and think they got a good deal. i live in the lakes and there are loads of people up here selling rubbish, but they tell the customer on the phone that its seasoned and ready to burn and the customer believes them.

If you can afford to hold your nerve then do it. Most of the bandwagon jumpers wont be around for long, and if they're repeatedly selling crap will soon find that business will dry up - unlike their wood.:001_rolleyes:

I'm busier than ever now, all from personal recommendations, no advertising for me this year! If yer selling a good product for a fair price then whats the issue? People will soon work out that its pointless saving 20 quid on a load of wood that wont burn.
