"Soft pruning"

Had similar at the AA  general meeting tonight - retrenchment pruning got a bit of a hammering (  Hatfield Forest)  was pleased that my favourite reduce method of 'drop crotching' or 'reduce by thinning' looked more sustainable for veteran trees. K

Dunno why the butt cutting ( cutting off branch with no growth point)  was thought as a good idea for veterans as- if it didnt LionsTail  - it died back or increased sailArea of tree with ( as was admitted) catastrophic results. ISA hated idea, and always indicated it was poor practise. K

To encourage or force epicormic growth typical of oaks naturally retrenching them selves ? In most cases it’s pretty obvious to see where they are or will naturally retrench themselves but I’ve seen some shocking stuff lately on social media.. but it’s not my place to make a comment !

I've just spent 2 days cutting 20 odd oaks back to a boundary line, hairy great pollards, 'shreds' I've heard them referred too in the U.K.

Previously fecked over by others so I had little room for improving their fortunes.

Strange thing is, they are actually an alignment which is protected... only from felling, not what has passed for pruning. No competance or permissions required.

In France, the limit of a property is often the place where trees lose their good looks.

When one neighbour writes a stern letter to the owner.

Regardless of age, character, amenity value, trees get sided up to conform with the law.
