Advice for a clueless mum

Hi There

 

I hope you are all well.  I wonder if I could ask some advice please for a clueless mum at Christmas!!  My son is just finishing his arboriculture apprenticeship and has found his calling!!  He mentioned getting a knife for work as a Christmas present and I don't have the first clue where to start - what to look for or what would be a great gift!  Any advice would be much appreciated and also if there is anything else that would be good for me to get him!  Thanks so much for any help.

I guess it depends what he wants it for.

 

If he wants a 'rescue knife' to hang on his climbing harness, these are fairly popular...

I had one ages ago...… and, alas,  lost it ages ago.

 

I believe the current style has a locking blade, so may fall foul of the 'legal carry' * requirements for strolling down the high street of a weekday evening though.

 

If he wants a knife for grafting apple scions, or other specialist activities, then he is going to require something a little more, errrr, specialist.

Clarify what he wants to cut/do with it then ask again as you are going to get a lot of various suggestions from fixed blade, lock, multi tool, silky, carving  etc

I would go with a general purpose multitool, as previously said a leatherman would go down well, Gerber also do decent ones, there's also Victorianox (sp), but also to go alongside an expensive one, I would also get something like a single blade opal knife which are very cheap, just to use as a bodging knife.

Why not just ask him what he wants? Will save that disappointed look when what you get him isn't quite what he wanted.
