err why, earn money now when your young, you don’t have to spend it just save it, as it will make life a lot easer when you get older >30 because with a few years hard work now you could have a significant percentage of the money you require to buy a house & probably could then pay the remainder off before your mid 30's easily then you can relax and just do 1 or 2 days a week ;)

There is always the flat rate scheme, turnover under 150K, you only pay 9% VAT but charge 17.5. You make monthly or quarterly instalments during the year - which are based on an estimate of your total annual VAT bill. At the end of the year you submit a single annual return and any balance due.

You don't have so much paperwork, but only claim VAT back on capital purchases over 2 grand.

I'm 29, been VAT reg'd since I was 24. I think you should plan on doing less work when you're older because your body might not give you any choice in the matter 15 or 20 years down the line.

I get 70 - 80% of jobs I price and I'm rarely the cheapest - if you're good you don't have to worry about being more expensive than some tin pot firm who don't charge VAT.

Agree with you there, it's how you come across to the customer, that will win you the job most of the time.

Just been looking at the poll that I set up in conjunction with this thread. I'm surprised to see that there are a few people who are trading as a ltd company but are not VAT reg'd. I wouldn't have thought that it was worth setting up a ltd company if you're not even at the VAT threshold??
