my favourite was a stihl cleaving axe ,what a smart tool untill i split the shaft banging in felling wedges! i would buy another if i saw one again as its a kind of axe maul hybrid....have an oregon maul which does the most work ....never buy cheap any thing under £40 is a waste of time imo stick to stihl, husky oregon or the likes like you would for saws ...

I've never had much luck (or patience) with wood grenades to be honest.

That rubber tyre trick mounted on the block is a neat solution! Thanks to SWB!

the hardest part is getting a big enough tyre thats is thin aswell, the best place is a farmers cylage pit, the old tyres that were used on bale trailers, really thin yet tall. you wont believe how quick you can break down a ring when it doesnt jump about or fall over and off. i saw the idea on utube:thumbup:

I have an old Ellwell 7lb axe, year stamped 1915 and 215 off the production line.

It was given to me by a customer and is perfectly balanced, splits better than any maul or axe I have used.

Husqvarna sledge axe 82cms - Chainsaw Specialists

I've just bought one of these sledge axes through my local Husky dealer. Absolutely fantastic quality and lovely to use, it wins hands down over the really nasty fibreglass handled mauls and is very handy for walloping wedges too.....
