Husky 346xp

Hi chaps recently picked up a free 346xp as always wanted one and new it needed abit of work.. it came with no muffler and the chap said work fine before just didn’t get round to fitting a new one ?

So new muffler fitted, starts fine but whines abit when pulling the cord... 

reved up lovely but would keep reving once finger is  off the accelerator then slow down and cut out.... just like this link

would it be an air leak causing this?

 

also seems to be a lot a bar oil leaking from behind the clutch plate... (picture shows how much oil from just from taking the bar off) could this be causing air leak some where down the line. Have attached some pictures of the piston etc etc as think could do with being replaced. 

 

Any info from people who had similar issues would be great.

The photo without the muffler seems to show marks on the piston. This might be a sign of it seizing previously.

 

It may be worth removing the clutch to check around the oil pump to see where the leak may be coming from.

Just rebuilt 346 with new seals cylinder and piston/ring and rebuilt carb. If you want it to last rebuild it. 

Oil leak is a problem on this model as well but check it's not got a cracked tank.

Chain oil is almost certainly leaking from the two pipes that "seal" onto the pump. Most of the ones I have had have done this. Replaced the pipes and pump still leaks.

 

It has clearly seized in the past. I'd vac/pressure check it. Then Pull the pot, likely will clean up and be usable. pop a meteor piston on it could have seized from poor fuel, but suspect air leak from the behaviour you describe, which will need addressing.

Have you tweaked ally plate that covers it,

I put a slight indent in with punch right were pipe is so it pushes hard on pipe.

I'll get round to that one of these days. Thanks for the tip. Quite an annoying trait the constant weeping of oil

The state of that piston its amazing the poor thing ran at all.

Seized and that hex bolt on the AV limiter isn't correct (bottom pic 2).

That saw needs a rebuild to the top end and would pressure and vac test the saw. Probably got issues with the inlet manifold and possibly the clutch side seal.

Threads in cylinder for the exhaust bolts look a bit suspect too, might need helicoiling... 

Same logic as above,  fix it properly now or it will be unreliable just when you need it.

Ideal, thanks for the info. Will crack on with a rebuild project and get him up and running again.
