Hi, I’m new here and I don’t like technology much so this may not go right, but here goes.

I am thinking of replacing my Makita top handle saw with either a Echo or an Efco as I get on well with both the local dealers, but I could do with any advice / help offered on what make to buy.  The Makita has been a good saw, but is now showing its age (it will be retained as a backup).

Thanks

Which model Makita you got 222 or 3410

After hitting a lot of different bits of the screen (it’s hard to work out how to reply to someone when looking at a “post” from a small mobile phone screen as I do not have broadband at home to see the “page / post” on a larger screen)

The model of Makita top handle that I own is a DCS 230T.

I also own a Jonsereds 630 Super “2” (still my favourite even though it’s now getting old), an Echo CS501SX, an Echo CS8002, a Makita DCS 4301 and a Efco TS327 pole-saw.

Hope this additional information is of some use and apologies if I have done something wrong by hitting bits of the screen that I should not have.

Ian C  you wanna give this new Dolmar topper a trial

I had a look Andrew and to be honest I’m not overly impressed, just doesn’t look right and my track history with dolmar isn’t great as you know, no body wants to use it now in fear of it blowing up again!

I’ve had an Echo 360 for 4 years and it’s great. It replaced a stihl 200t which frankly was a pain in the arse with carb issues. The echo comfortably handles the 14” bar it comes with. I run it alongside a stihl 150 for smaller stuff which will be replaced by an echo 2511 eventually. Downsides are stupid small filler caps and a rattley exhaust. It is boringly reliable!

Out of those choices I'd go with echo. The 360tes is a good saw and if all you were doing is big dismantles but I personally find that the 2511 is good for over 90% of the work I do. I have both but the 360 barely leaves the shed any more as I'll usually just switch up to a 550xp if there's anything large to cut.

On the ms150 bar and chain (or panther bar if bought from chainsaw bars which would be my recommendation if you do want to buy one) the 2511 happily handles the 10" bar and that will get you a long way through a tree, take into account it's small size and light weight and it will also do reductions negating the need for a silky and making jobs faster and easier. It's a no brainer for me really

I don't climb but from being earthbound, the Echo 2511 and the MS150 with muffler mods and a retune are excellent and bigger....MS200, has to be, anyone who doesn't say that hasn't got one that has been fettled by someone who knows what they are doing or has just forgotten how good they are!
