will the poorer quality petrol cause premature engine wear like it does on the saws? are there any 500+ hour petrol engined machines out there?

Not to the same degree I'd say. From what I've understood, its a problem with 2 stroke oil separation and ethanol eating the rubber components of the carbs. In big engines with an oil sump and float valve carbs or injection or whatever, this is less of an issue.

You do hear of quite a few stump grinder engines needing replacing after wearing out. not sure if they have done loads of hours or are just not as good quality as diesel engines?

I looked into reviews of the engine before getting a petrol chipper and the 37hp enging they using has been clocking up 2000 hrs + on lawn tractors etc in america with no issues. Just as good as a diesel imho

stump grinder engines go on one pot cos of the angle they work at. I replaced an engine on my rayco last year (a 1997 one.. original engine) last year and cost about £1200 for a brand new engine, not a big deal really! dont forget petrol engines in cars can do 200000 miles no prob! half hour chipping a day is nothing

One of the main issues for petrol engines on plant in the UK is the law regarding transportation of petrol. It's only supposed to be 2x5l cans in your vehicle and no more.

I also don't like the stench of petrol in the truck, the fact they expand like balloons in warm weather, the cost and the fuel economy.

I had a Kohler 38hp v twin on a sawmill from a few years back and the engine had to be replaced under warranty. It was loud and obnoxious too compared to a diesel.
