Unauthorised tree work in CA.

If owner knew about CA and proceeded to get tree removed, that's a clear-cut wilful destruction, with unlimited fines. Unless the tree work was "urgently necessary in the interests of safety;", the co dom stem is a bullshit excuse and the owner would have to prove it retrospectively.

It's up to you if you report it, depends on how much you like trees , how much you would like the industry to be properly regulated and and with less chancers and cowboys and whether you care that the Council is unable to enforce the laws that our parliament made on behalf of society. I know what I'd do, but I'm not a contractor any more so I don't care if I get a reputation for giving a s%$£.
CA was discussed at time of quote and directly referred to in emailed quotes. Absolutely knew about it. Other tree surgeon quoted before me but didn't mention CA, so homeowner was surprised when I raised it. I think they think I was trying to find a way to quote higher.

Just swallow your bitter little pil and move on (nothing to see here! emoji23.png) just out of interest how big was your quote? Could just be a lesson in pricing the job...

Price was £650 (no vat) , for 40ft birch dismantle, massive monkey puzzle 60ft crown lift/deadwood removal, shrubs trimmed and other small saplings removed including roots. Including CA application.

Seems fair ? I'd quoted 600 for three 40ft pines to be dismantled and a 30ft cony to fell but bloke cancelled week before cos someone said they'd do it for 250 and the wood! ?

By my 'move on' statement I only want to offer you wisdom from a past similar experience - as they say, those who stick their heads above the trench,,,  get shot!

But morals are (should be) everything ?

The £250 plus the logs crew are jokers, if folk choose that option they better feel lucky and keep their fingers ?.

I will probably leave it but make them sweat a bit waiting to see if I report it. Shame the TO is off, cause I could of just had a word bout it.

Even if it's not one for the courts, the LPA could hassle the owner into replacing it as is their legal duty.

True. To enforce it, the Council would have to prove that there had been a breach. A decision on whether to prosecute would have to be made at that point.

It would take no more time to forward detail to LA than it has done to post here.  Why should those that "do it right" give way to those that don't.

If it bothers you enough to post on here it should bother you enough to take the time to email the LA and let them take it forward.  No good complaining if you don't follow it up.

OK, gonna sleep on it then make a decision. These folk only live 3 door down so that complicates it a bit, do I want to fall out with my neighbours over it?

Interesting, after initial responses of "it's crap but move on" to a number of "report it" ones.

Cheers guys.
