USING A MS661 WITH AN ALASKAN MILL

Hello Members.

 

Bought a new MS 661 today - for use with an Alaskan mill and slabbing. Not for me but an experienced son. Also getting the MS 880.

Collected it personally and asked for advice on mills and the options available.

 

Well, was basically told that such a saw was not designed for such use and I would be back with issues, not normally, covered by the warranty ?

 

Seemingly, such a saw does not like being used in this way and will be 'shaken' to death ?

 

We will also have issues with the fuel mixture, bolts coming loose and the air filter ?

 

It was suggested, helpfully, that we consider changing the bar for a smaller pitch and use a rip chain.  

 

Oh, and the best option for us, is to buy a Lucas Mill !

 

What are the thoughts of others please.....

Logosol sawmills who were owned by stihl, recommend using the 661.
Personally I use a 661 for milling under 30".
However, the 880 is far superior for milling.
Who told you this info?

661 is fine for milling. A lo-pro set up is great and an 880 is better for big stuff but to say the 661 is not up to it is plain wrong. As Rough Hewn, I use the 661 for up to 30" and very happy with it.

Whoever told you that has never done any milling. Unless you planning on doing a a ton of boards for cladding or something?

The 880 is fabulous milling saw mine is on it 3rd year no problems.
All you need to do is clean airfilter every two boards and keep the saw well maintained and clean after each day off use.

Been using a 661 for milling for about 18 months. No problems at all.
