Dog intelligence

Hidi, our very cute daschund/border collie cross had to take a course of tablets, over a week or so, twice a day.

I got the first couple in by wrapping them in fridge-cold butter.

Then she caught on.

And after licking the butter off the tablet reproachfully deposited it on the floor.

I then got the next few in, forcing open her mouth and posting them right into her gullet, holding her jaw shut and massaging her throat until she swallowed, she did not attempt to bite me btw, though she struggled violently, and she is very very strong.

This process lasted 2 or 3 days, including finding and catching and struggling with her when she knew it was tablet time.

Despite her fierce and determined struggles, once the tablet was down and I released her, she stayed put for cuddles!

Last night she got the better of me, twice, so I let her go, then a few minutes later, with little hope of success, offered her the butter coated tablet again, which she took and swallowed.

This morning I offered her the butter coated tablet which she immediately accepted and swallowed.

Wow!

Hidi had worked out that she was required to take the tablet, and might as well do so gracefully, and to get the butter I suppose.

I though this a very impressive logical thought process for a dog.

Dogs are very intelligent, but the also do the most stupidest things sometimes as well!

Bit like most of their owners then I imagine.

P.S.

The Bulldogs wolfed them down without a thought, perhaps the "dumb blondes" of the dog world, lovable but  .  .  .

When we had the 2 large banddog/mastiff/pitbull  breed dogs, both with impeccable mid-air food-catching techniques, one simply threw them snacks, interspersed with the tablets, they were swallowed before owt was registered amiss.

Bessie could so accurately assess and predict the flight path of tossed chicken bones, that she could catch them end on and swallow them instanteanously.
