Big Oak stick

Hi, i'm currently quoting for the felling of a Turkey Oak.  The trunk is the best piece of timber that i've see in a long time- approx 20ft tall, dead straight and 3ft wide - ISH.

The owner had initially intended to keep the main trunk on site but has now asked for a re-quote to take all away.  It would be a crying shame to ring it up.

The trouble is the extraction, it's 100yds into a wooded area with a bendy track that is only just big enough for a transit.

On site milling may be an option if it will be worth while for the owner as the noise will disturb the local college and shops.

 

So before I get back to the owner, I need to know if a piece of wood like this would be worth the effort for the miller and the owner, or just to quote to carve it up?

Tree is in Cambridge.

Turkey oak breaks up quite bad went drying.not structural strong in beams.
Fire wood i think.
But let others confirm this they may have other things they can do with it.

Even for firewood it doesn't have the best rep!  Is it actually good for anything?

Any local farmer should be able to drag it out with a tractor?

and

Chainsaw carve it into a woodland seat, assuming there would be a suitable site for it, perhaps in the local college grounds?

Or carve it into a totem pole?

If the sums aren't adding up to the owner's liking can't it be left for the beetles?

FWIW... I have had some as firewood and would say that it's ok...average....

It isn't as good as regular oak , it does take a while to dry.

The woodland seating / sculpture seems a nice idea.

Unfortunately true. My old boss bought one standing once to mill as it was a very impressive tree, massive trunk, etc. When his old Devonshire cutter turned up with a Fordson Major to winch it over, and told him it was a f%&*ing Turkey, he did some rapid negotiating to the extent we were paid (not much though) to take it away. Horrible timber, masses of sapwood, rough grain thats hard to cross cut, a night mare to split and not even much good for sleepers as not very durable. Blame the Yanks, I believe thats where it came from originally.
