Slight de rail ..Apart from the Deerhunter I mentioned earlier , years ago I bought one of the first Barber non wax type  coats . It was considered modern back then . Still got as it is light weight and more useful down South .  It is still about 70% water proof but has a really grim smell to it when wet . So much so it has to hang in the garage until dry . Any other coats stink when wet ?

I get that Paul.

The whole point of the thread is can anyone recommend something that will keep me dry for say 10 years at £500?

I hate shopping.

The RL was only really waterproof for about 2 of the 5 years.

Re-read the thread title.

Just get something cheap - if revolutionary waterproof fabric hits the market youll wish youd saved the 500 for that

Nørrono stuff is great but very expensive.

The Hagloffs on I have is great.  Top end mountain equipment.

It is available in Normal colours.  I will have it at the APF Mark as it is only single skin and packs down so small it is very handy.

I bought one of these 2 or 3 years ago now

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Snickers-18882604007-X-Large-GORE-TEX-Jacket/dp/B00AZPSQMY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1535401172&sr=8-4&keywords=snickers+goretex+jacket

It is bomb proof as far as longevity and I imagine it will still be in action in another 10 years without any exageration.

Downside, too hot in anything above a few degrees. The one I have is triple layer goretex. I'm actually wishing I paid less and got the double layer goretex version as it is too hot. It's rarely freezing when it's raining... That said if you are working on a very light job or being a banksman on something or other then ideal.
