Petrol Drill for rod bracing

Hi All.

I wanted to see what people’s thoughts were on the best petrol drill for installing bracing rods.

I’ve been looking at the Stihl BT 45 which seems to be the best option.

What’s the maximum length drill bit it will power going through green wood? And is it up for the job?

I have a couple of bracing jobs to do, and have looked into getting one on hire, but have struggled to find anywhere that has one.

Is it worth trying to find a second hand one, or are they generally used and abused?

Any other makes that are worth looking at?

I did come across an attachment for a saw, thinking that it could be used on a larger engine unit for larger stuff, but without the reverse, thought it’s likely to get stuck easily.

It’s not something that will have that much use, so wanted to do some research before buying a new one, and see what anyone’s experiences are.

Cheers.

I Use a BT 45 with drill bits well over a meter long ,tree stuff USA sells them and also the rods and eyes as I found it almost impossible to source them in the U.K. if you put an order in don’t forget them, shipping and import are a bit high but it’s quick delivery and also a good excuse to order up some non CE cougar blue ;)

Robi is a good petrol drill, picked up the one below s/h yonks ago and its been reliable. The good thing about them is they all have a centrifugal clutch that kills the power the second you let go of the throttle so if you get snagged up it wont take you for a ride :)  Bt45 seems to be the No1 choice and hold their money but Robi, Tanaka and Echo all make similar, usually a lot cheaper too.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tanaka-Petrol-Powered-Drill-Japanese-TED-270-LS-Free-Stihl-Oil/132727888556?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2763.l2649

Got this one of Ebay and it has no problem drilling big holes in oak posts.

Would appear Tree stuff are out of 60” augers but they have a wider selection of smaller ones.. the old chainsaw drill attachments are pretty good from memory , I did have an old stihl one but sold it unfortunately.
