The suggestion of torches is a good one.
I have a couple of really powerful led torches that do the strobe thingy and it isn't something I would want aimed at my eyes, you literaly can't see a bloody thing and also can't see what the person holding it is just about to hit you with.

You read it differently to me.  I read it as a torch capable of holding 3 D batteries is a sizeable, weighty, and innocent weapon to smack someone over the head with

I always used to have one in my rucksack when I was using the trains and Tube to go to work in London. 'Well, Officer, there's a lot of dog crap on the pavement on my walk home from the station'.

Yep in all seriousness. Torch and megaphone from the bedroom window is what I'm leaning toward. Light up the whole area and turn megaphone on whilst I'm calling the police talking loudly on the phone about the criminal thieving scum, whilst they're in action.

Someone posted towards the start of this thread about the strobe function on some torches.

Another good one is a big powder filled fire extinguisher with a hose. Blast the contents into the face - causes choking and blindness, then swing the bottle like a morning star by the hose. However, the power can cause permanent eye damage, apparently...So ware goggles.
