Views please on Stihl MS391 chainsaw.

I’ll be a casual user, but looking for something with a bit of grunt and a 20” Bar. I have used a Stihl previously and was seriously impressed with it, I fancied this model for no other reason than it fits price range and has a bit more power, but whilst doing my research I’ve seen some terrible reviews (but they were dated) and wanted to seek the views of any professionals who may have purchased this model in the last 12 months.

Its a popular saw in America, I believe marketed there as the farm boss but I may be wrong.  That would suggest its not in the professional range of Stihl products, again I may be wrong also.  Maybe a 362 would be a better option

My neighbour has one, its a plastic clamshell model, semi-pro and the latest version of the 039, 390 farmboss, but way more advanced, strato motor, spring antivibes etc. Its heavy. He is happy with his and has had it a good while...

Wot is ur price range? Or wot are they wanting for the 391?

 

For a 20" bar a 372xp is a cracking saw, very old technology/design but has stood the test of time very well, possibly a smaller 60cc husky might do ther trick too.

Might be some good deals going about with the new 572 out

 

I have a stihl362 and really like it, done a lot of work with no problems althou i wouldn't fancy running it full time with a 20" bar, althou i must admit when i put a 18" bar on occasionally it copes fine

For a 20" bar i'd be looking for a 65+cc saw

Just bought a second hand 372 on eBay hasn’t come yet but hoping it’s not a dog. There seem to be quite a few on there at the moment, guess people are replacing them with the new 572.

Yeah, I’d seen that reference to ‘farm boss’. 

I’m looking to spend £5-£600, and do love Stihl.

I expect it will only be running for about 4-8 hours per week (on average), in the main will be used on Beech, largest being about 3’ diameter hence a 20” Bar.

Deal’s not done yet, so happy to look at suggestions, but I don’t think I could move away from the Stihl.

Right.... look at a new husq 365xp on f r jones site.... 560.00 odd inc 4 spare chains on a 20” bar.... brand new saw!

 

there is a mod to make it into a full blown 372.... its the same cc etc 70 cc

I have seen some good prices on new 372xp at dealers since the 572 has come out, would run a 20 inch bar nicely, be well made and still be a bit "old school" engine wise ?

I'm not that bothered about brands really, but from ur post i take it u already have stihls?

 

I would imagine ur new stihl chains and bars might be compatabile with ur new saw.

If u swap to husky they definately won't be unless u change the sprocket.

Not a massive issue but a pita when running both stihls and husky's.

 

Both the saws mentioned above are cracking saws
