All lifting equipment is covered under LOLER but there were exemptions for the requirement for  independent inspection for 3pt linkages, pulling winches that suspend a load behind a tractor and also agricultural front loaders and grapple loaders (as long as the operator is protected by FOPS or POPS). I doubt much has changed since I was an FMOC NPTC assessor  some 15 years ago.

 

The difference is at no time is the load suspended above anyone (apart from the protected operator) and neither is a person raised by the equipment. This can be a moot point with some trailer cranes.

That’s interesting as when I recently asked for an insurance quote from Nfu for a tractor with front loader they said it would need loler checking which I was surprised by. Never been asked that before and I doubt any farmers round here do.
