also you'd be working on a fairly sizable stem to bore the saw in and make those sorts of cuts!

13 years in the industry and ive never heard of a holding cut.

Just concentrate on the cuts you need for the assesmemt,

Sink cut free fall
Sink cut hand held
Step cut free fall
Step cut hand held
(In board and out board)
Target prune

You wont be felling out massive chunks on assesmemt the assessor will want to see your work postion and control with the saw whilst completing your cuts.
