proof of training in each example (not specific rope but style e.g 16 strand) and some sort of proof that the training you have gives splices of acceptable breaking strain. Is it possible to get your own splices inspected and tested to breaking by an approved body?

We can all sit a training course and get a certificate of attendance but that is worth nothing if you didn't listen or understand

I spliced an eye in my Tachyon, I told the loler inspector that I had done it and he checked it out and passed it, I thing thats good enough.:001_smile:

At the end of the day I wouldn't climb on it if I thought it wasn't right.

That define you as competent?

I'm not looking for a subjective answer suck as Kev's, I can come up with plenty myself. I need a definitive answer i.e. Who can and who can't........

Competence (human resources) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So splicing a rope for PPE is not a good idea?

Nobody can prove competence in splicing?, keeping records of the ropes you splice, batch number, lot numbers, the splice you perform the record of that splice, the records of splices that under go break testing, none of this proves that you are competent to splice?

Three company's in this country that I know of that splice ropes for use as PPE are they competent?

Interesting.

There is no definitive answer to competent.

Can you prove you are a competent tree climber? Yes, you should be qualified (to get this you will have been tested and observed) and in a court of law that qualification would be accepted as a proof of competence.

To prove competence you must have had the task tested to an accepted level, for splices surely that must be to a given breaking strain and quality. There are defined methods for splicing (e.g. amount of buried cord, etc), if you follow these giude lines and if you have had some of your splices break tested (and they passed) you would be able to prove competence.

Anyone else I would assume could be well practiced and possibly competent but not proven competent.
