We live near a town called Alfreton and all the locals call it Offten and a nearby road is called Highstairs lane pronounced Easter lane. I used to work with a southerner who pronounced Leicester how it is spelt like "lie sess ter" Dialect can play a part also as I was asking for directions a long time ago before sat nav and if you don't emphasise the middle syllable in Wilbarston the locals don't know what you are on about :D It's Wilbaaaaarston !

They do it so that they know if you are a foreigner or not,  meaning North of the Great Ouse or South of the Waveney, ma old buty!
