Ms201t clutch removal

Looking at my 201t clutch, there is a hex key on it for a socket but it only stands about 2mm proud. Now I know I've removed one before but I'm pretty sure I was able to get a socket and air gun onto it. Doesn't seem possible on mine. 

 

Any ideas?

Should work, just remember its a left hand thread.

Just put a bit of recoil rope in the plug hole and use a socket and wrench on it spinning it off clockwise as previously mentioned, should be easy for a man with your gargantuan talents

Anyone saying "don't use rope".......sod off

Yeah that's how I've always done it, the problem is that the hex key is too shallow for a socket to get any purchase, it only just stands proud of the clutch.

Damn, what is one to do, I wonder what the repair shops do???

Looks like your sockets have big round lips on the end of them, not good for shallow hexes like this......how about getting a cheap socket and grinding the rounded lips off so it has square ends and grips that shallow hex head down to the base....now that would be a good idea - I may have even done that on a few sockets

 good shout Steve, I was going to cut a combi spanner to shape but that's a better plan.

Update, I was definitely not being a simpleton.

 

Cracked the handle today when I dropped my saw without short clipping it. Nipped over to the local stihl dealer who luckily are first class. He repaired it on the spot for me, and pointed out the clutch was on the wrong way round!

 

I've had the saw from new in 2012 and am pretty sure I've not had the clutch off for any reason, but it certainly explains why I was struggling whereas I've had no issue with other 201t clutches!

No I think he has been using it upside down........
