Hi all,i attended a 16 strand rope splicing course earlier this week with nod from tree worker. It was a very educational and enjoyable day taught by someone who really knows what there talking about:thumbup1:.

Id say that anyone whos interested in the make up and construction of there ropes would really learn and get alot from attending such a course.

Cant wait for the 24 strand one now:biggrin:

I went to treeworkers site after reading this thread, they got all the tools info and training youll ever need. These boys @ treeworker are hardcore, shall be doing this course myself.

Had another go a making a ropeguide. Using rubber fuel line in the eye and hose pipe over the eye.

 

I took the old one (using wire) apart and looked at the ends of the wire, which I had sealed using epoxy resin. The epoxy resin was beginning to crack already, starting to expose some of the cut wire ends. Just a word of warning to those using wire in the eye. I think the reason mine did not work out was the epoxy resin I used set far to hard. Perhaps something more flexible would be better so that it does not crack and potentially allow the ends to become exposed and wear through the rope.

 

I feel much more comfortable with rubber in the eye, even if it was a bit harder to get in there!

I agree completely. Wire and rope doesn't mix well.

 

Has anyone has the nerve to dissect the eye in the pulley saver? I heard that has a rubber core too.

I finally got the time and rope to have a crack at a class 1 double braid splice. I wanted to make a lanyard up so I could try the cinch I have had sitting around in my bag of tricks and which doesn't fit on my current lanyard. I have been splicing the **** out of 50odd meters of 16 strand I 'retired' when I caught the splicing bug and was suprised to find the class 1 splice quite easy in comparison.

Heres a couple pics. Yale Blaze eye splice on each end (1 end yet to be whipped). Stoked with the way it turned out and can't resist posting a few pics.
