Sparrow in wood burner

Found a sparrow in our wood burner this morning!

We have a cowl on top of the chimney but it has small louvres that it must have got in through. Must have been very determined to have been able to make it actually inside the wood burner as there is a soot trap below the flue outlet on the burner that I'm sure it would have fallen in to.

We don't have an inspection hatch so would have to take the fire bricks out to get it out if it hadn't made it's own way through. Just hope I haven't been using the burner when there's been a bird down there in the past :blushing:

Anyone else found a bird in their wood burner?

Young starlings get in everywhere, we had three trying to batter their way out through the greenhouse glass even though the door and roof vent were wide open. A friend of mine has just bought a wire cowl for the chimney as he has had Jackdaws down there and they can't get to release them without knocking some brickwork out so they took a few days to die off.

Now I've seen those pictures I think it could have been a Starling not a Sparrow :blushing:

Thankfully our windows are tilt and turn so they open like a door. It flew straight out the window when I opened the burner door. Might have to see about getting on the roof and putting some mesh round the cowl if it happens again. I'd be surprised if a bigger bird could get down there as I would of thought this one would have been a tight fit to get through the gaps in the cowl.

My friend had a barn owl....a couple years later he was telling me about it one eve, i went over and opened the log burner....and I **** you not there was another barn owl in there. Got a blanket, grabbed it and chucked it out the door. It was huge.
