Summer pruning of oak trees

Hi Guys

I have some minor pruning to carry out on a mature oak in full leaf.The area is not affected by the oak wilt beetle.Would be interested to read your thoughts.

do you mean a small / specific area for a particular reason or a little bit all over?

 

difficult to know what might be a valid consideration given the vagueness of the description, but consider the potential for change from shade / partial shade of inner canopy foliage if removing outer canopy foliage - can be detrimental for Beech, just guessing similar might apply in your circumstances....

Hi Guy - are you in USA - Cant see any problems with pruning it now - I thought Oak wilt was a fungal disease or is this something else

Is summer pruning not now considered as good if not better than winter pruning?

 

I think the tradition of winter pruning is mostly down to ease, as there are no leaves, plus the fact that often the guys who cut the trees also cut the grass, so winter pruning made perfect sense.

This could make some evolutionary sense as well.

Trees in leaf will get eaten more so will have needed to have methods to seal and regrow in summer more so than in winter?

Don't know about evolution, but they're in a highly active state in the summer in temperate zones, useful when they need to produce barriers against colonisation of decay pathogens

Sorry guys,I was a bit vague in my original post.Reducing around. 7 lateral limbs encroaching neighbouring property,taking around 5-6 feet of branch tips.Biggest pruning cut was about 2.5 inches.Thanks for your thoughts.

Tree is in Scotland
