I have cut a large one down to ground level before with a chainsaw.

Yes the chain will go blunt so use an old chain and make sure you clean it out afterwards but it'll do it. I dug the rest of it out with a spade, not as hard as it looks!

I've used a hedge cutter but done multiple sweeps, a few inches at a time, working downwards.

Wide teeth hedgecutter seems to work the best. Keep a close eye on your van keys.

Yes, I am always sharp, but in this case would use a hedge trimmer.

Flatyre...if using a hedge cutter slice in like cutting a cake then cut outwards .

Ok i'll take an old saw but try the hedge cutter and bush cutter first. thanks folks
