My cheap Chinese chainsaw experience

 

I have noticed that even though everyone, has seen or heard of the cheap Ebay/Amozon chainsaws, there are suprisingly few reviews of the things on here. So I figured I would give my take on china's finest.

 

I will start by explaining, how i got into a situation in which I needed to buy something with such...... questionable reliability. It all started when some dumb f*ck delivery driver, "left my package with a neighbor" that package being a nice reconditioned Jonsereds 80. To make a long story short he just left it on my driveway, and inevitably got nicked. Needing a chainsaw desperately to finish felling, some 32" ash on a neighbors property, I go on to eBay and order the "beast", and well this is my experience with the saw.

 

It started well out of the box, and felled and bucked 2 32" ash trees with (about 2 cords of firewood). But after that initial victory it started to run into issues, First the chain ,that came with the saw, snapped in two and few of into the brush. Then a couple days later the pull starter assembly broke.

 

I contacted the company that sold me the saw (SGS engineering), who sent me out a new pull starter and chain. I fitted the pull starter and threw the chain in the bin, so I could fit a better/safer Oregon chain.

 

After about a month of using it most weekends and cutting, a further 3 cords of firewood (hardwood between 10" and 25"). After which point I replaced the stock bar and gave it a new Oregon chain.

 

A week after this point the Anti vibration/felling handle got bent, but it was easy to bend back into shape and has cause no further problems.

 

So scores on the doors

Customer service: 10/10 great customer service, sent spare parts with little hassle

 

Quality: 7/10 Ok, but probably not great for anything more than homeowner use.

 

Safety: 4/10 Not that good, previously mentioned flying chain and the chain break is off low quality.

 

So overall I would probably not recommend to anyone cutting more than a cord or 2 of wood a year, and I would definitely recommend replacing the chain if you go with this saw.

not sure what to say chuck, you get what you pay for, but then I know people who have bought cheap Chinese junk and it's lasted years, I also know folk who bought top quality saws and have had nothing but bad luck. Personally I don't believe in bad saws, just bad expectations of what a saw will do, based on the kind of work you described, big trees and all, I would have gone for a good quality used saw myself.

But seriously. Surely you could have dispensed with the Chinese rubbish and just roundhouse-kicked those trees into firewood?

I have a couple of cheap chinese saws both bought in desperation due to the stihls being in the shop getting repairs,

Both have different manufacturers and i've diferent experiences with them, the 20" 58cc model is just rubbish, the bar is sloppy the chain is soft the engine wont run properly no matter what i do to it and the plastic round the screws just crumbles if you strip it too much to get to the problems.

the saw set me back about £100 and its cut twice that but it's been hard work getting that back in firewood alone. its currently sitting in the loft doing nothing

 

the small pruning saw has gotten me out of trouble a few times and been a very usefull saw ( it's no ms150 ) but it has earned it keep and paid for it's self many times over, I converted it to the stihl small gauge chain and bar along with the sprocket and it runs even better with the light chain.

The AV mounts could do with being a little more forgiving and the chain brake could do with being a bit smaller, but the saw quickly replaced my ms150 when i stepped on it.

Thats not saying im going to keep runnng the cheap saw once i've repaired the 150 but it's a good backup for the apprentice to train with or if your main saw goes down.

 

These cheap saws have there place but you have to know the limitations and lower your expectations

I bought a 25cc top handle for a one of job and I've used it a few times since. Plastics seem a bit floppy but it starts and runs fine now I cleaned the carb out after it had been standing for a while. It runs on Aspen 2 now not the 25:1 mix in the booklet, much less smoke.

I ONCE bought a cheap Chinese pole saw. Chain oil leak from new. Very cheap chain oiling system. Never did work right. Impossible to extend reach, as pole extension had seized. No switch decal saying which was off and which was on. What I presumed to be on, was off. Supplier was very offensive when I complained. Would I buy another - NO.
