A starting 'code' with start/stop button may be more secure than a key just as a security point.

More likely a kid will nick a set of keys...

GM chippers with the RDS panel have this built in but it is a faff to have to use it each time you start the engine, blokes tend to keep the machine idling which sort of defeats the object.

Just thought I would ask the question, has anyone had any problems with the axle of their greenmech chipper. After leaving site last week I lost the drivers side wheel while doing about 40mph. As you can see from the picture the stub shaft failed.

The chipper is 750kg and the axle rated at 850kg, I have now upgraded to 1350kg. Two local arborists have other models both Greenmech and although they didn't have a wheel come off they both have had issues, cracked welds on the axle and the wheels start to point inwards ie the rubber grommets inside the box section behind the wheel hubs failing.

Don't get me wrong this chipper is amazing for its size and apart from the key snapping inside the key barrel (this has happened twice in 18 month ) i have no problem with it , just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this or its one of those things. Luckily no one was hurt or property damaged when the accident happened.

The best prevention is regular servicing and re grease bearings. But just for belt and braces I often jack our trailers up and spin the wheels any binding or rumbling it's taken of the road and repaired. If you put the hand brake on and of and hubs start binding it's probably the brake cables corroded inside. The biggest cause of stub/bearing failure on trailers not used on slipways and salt water is binding break shoes. The covering on brake cables is very thin and stone chips allow salt water in. I tend to change brake cables at 4 years as a service item . £15 for a cable is a lot cheaper than a hub Assembly at £200
