Most of what I burn is ash. Usually because it's bloody good stuff and because it can be burnt pretty well straight away.

Clearly, it won't burn as well as if its had a few months seasoning. If it's all you've got, get it on the fire. It'll sizzle a little bit. Get the next lot you want to chuck on the fire in the warm and dry. I stack mine alongside the log burner for a few hours. Good to go.

I love seasoned ash but I've found stuff that hasn't seasoned fully doesn't burn that well on my stove.

To answer the original question, IIRC, freshly felled green ash is about 45% water, seasoned should be around 20%, so a fair amount of the energy in the wood is going to be used to burn off the water - possibly depositing it in your chimney.

As others have said, season it for a year, split if it's not small logs.

Green Ash burns better than all other green timbers, but once seasoned its not the best, seasoned Beech will make green Ash look pretty crap, as others have said if your stuck green Ash will get you warm.

I have in the past burned Ash the same day it was felled (winter felled), but I did end up having a chimney fire :blushing:

My advice would be to try and get organised and burn dry wood, once you get in front, you will have a better fire and burn less timber for more heat :001_smile:
