is that 064 or 460? either way, for genuine mahle p+c go and see local stihl dealers (wont be cheat tho)... for non-genuine parts, ebay, tho bear in mind many non-genuine parts are very poor quality castings, and will need cleaning up and usually modifying to make them up to scratch, and sometimes even to make them useable at all...

I would go to a Stihl dealer for a piston, for a 44 a piston and rings is around sixty quid so one for yours would be a little more, the cylinder though, I would, as others have said try ebay as a new one is expensive, you can try Bailey's - Chainsaw Parts > Piston & Cylinder Kits > Cylinder Kits for Stihl for a new one or a new non factory item.

How bad is the original cylinder? I have managed to salvage a damaged cylinder on a friends 044 and Peter did the same on a 066.

Thanks its a ms640

Just got in and took of exhaust and its looking quite scored but will look at the cylinder when I have a chance ,wasn't sure about non gen parts, will look in the usual places ebay etc but looks like I will bite the bullet as its cheaper than a new saw..... ouch!

Oh the joys !!

ooh, exotic!

the ms640 is quite a rarity in the western world... mostly sold in developing countries. sold alongside the ms381 (updated 038) ms760 etc

europe and the us had 064 then 066 then the numbering system changed to ms660 etc and the 064 was dropped from those markets. some parts of the world it lived on as the 640.

anyways... irrelevant trivia aside...

you are more likely to come across 064 parts (which will more than likely all interchange, certainly the p+c are the same)

I always thought the 064 and 066 were available at the same time.

My understanding was that they were basically the same same saw, but the 064 had a lighter bottom end.

Yeah the 64 is just a bit lighter than the 66 for up a tree but your only talking grams but it all helps.

Sods law its been sleeping for a while and now I have a big run on to use it and it doesnt want to play anymore!

Will phone round and check and get prices today, Hss hire near me do quite good deals on stihl bits but will also wait for replies from fleabay..............
