You mentioned that you were grounded for a number of years due to injury - shoulder presumably. If this is a factor that could recurr, think hard about whether it's worth the risk. Shoulders are a bugger to fix when they go bad. Reg Coats recently did a video about converting to SRT and how it saved his back. Might be relevant. Also horses can be utilised in woodland management as low impact extraction option.

Hi Jennie about half way in to my career I completely lost interest , hated it ,infact the weather and dealing with the general public mostly is what did me in so I quit took a month out on redundancy pay as the company owner was changing at that time and said it was the least he could do for being his lead climber for a good few years any way after looking for work and finding none apart from joining the army ! I did a days work in a factory, day two I didn't go back and within a week I was back working as a lead climber for another tree company again.. I really enjoyed it this time but within 6 months I had gone self employed and honestly would say it was the best thing I ever did for many reasons.

I think you need to try some thing else to maybe appreciate what you have or figure out what you can do.

22, spent 2 1/2 years in the tree the rest on the ground due to injury, not sure I can go back to being a climber and be able to say that my shoulders will survive it. Have most of my own gear, harness ect and ground saw ect ect. I've got all of my relevant basic groundy tickets but due to being self employed I know I should have but I never bothered getting any further tickets.

I went to being employed as I had commitments (horses) to pay for and at the time I wasn't getting quite enough work being self employed. Now I'm wondering if I should have just stuck with being self employed and diversified.

I'm stuck on what to do as I've only ever done this as a job and I do enjoy it most of the time but good days seem to be less regular.

Just wondered if there's something similar that I could do till I realised that I actually do love my job

Do you still have the horses to pay for? In my experience horses can be a huge drain on personal finances but if you are passionate about keeping horses then perhaps you should diversify in that direction. I think the key to job satisfaction is having a passion for whatever industry you work in. I am passionate about arboriculture and cannot see me changing to anything else now, although I previously was employed as an engineer. If I had stayed in that field of work I would have been better off financially but would not have had the quality of working life I enjoy today. So my advice is find a subject you are passionate about, retrain and follow it through into business.

You may need to make some sacrifices at first but it will be worth it in the long run. Good luck.

With a this rain / climate change, how about buying a digger and trailer and go about the farms etc doing ditch and drainage work?

 

One guy round here is run off his feet YEAR ROUND doing just that...

 

And with you saying you have an old injury, it's not heavy work really....
