  1. 1. Are there too many tree surgeons in the UK?

    • Far too many; so much competition I can barely survive!

    • Not too many but don't need any more!

    • Could do with a few more to be honest!

    • Nowhere near enough. So much wood and so little expertise!

ok. count em up!

how many pages of tree surgeons in your yellow pages? ( sadly still a good metre stick )

edinburgh= 5 sides of listings

When I started up in 2003 there was only 1.5 sides! What surprised me was how many firms had upped their spend this year.

i will never forget when my groundy kept asking to do things in the evenings and weekends fishing golf etc

had to exsplain that i couldnt and that i have NO time for socialising or playing

and that to keep us busy i had to look at at least 5-10 jobs a week.

you guys understand most jobs are never over a days work so you have to look at, price up, and get at least 1 job every day.

we are not like other profesions ie builders who if lucky find themselves with 3months worth of work from 1 job

oh and yeah i agree shrek the pressure of paying wages which inturn finances other peoples lives is massive

my grondys been grumbleing about money lately.

what can i do ..... i cant control what he spends and on what

ive told him before that i will pay him 1000 per week but your be out of a job within 2 weeks

in regards to original post there is to many tree cutters out there and enough quality tree surgeons, the customer has to chose between the two

like it how the whole picture is not painted but we wont go there

Just a quick post to apologise to all the established tree surgeons on here, for not having been doing this for years preferably with my father doing the same before me.

I have only really started doing tree work this year, Though I have been a gardener for a good while longer.

( A gardener with a ladder maybe?) I don't know.

What I do know is my customers are pleased to have someone who turns up on time on the day they say they will, at the time they say they will. Who tidies up afterwards, who involves them with what is happening and explains the reasons for doing things if they want to know.

I have been told many times, "We have had cheaper quotes, can you match that?" I always say no, and I rarely lose the job on price.

More tree surgeons than before doesn't mean that you are having the meal taken off your table.

Supply and demand means that when there are too many people doing a job then the worst ones will not find work. Just because you've been doing it longer doesn't mean you're not one of the worst ones. Being there first doesn't mean no one else can set up. Be good at what you do and it wont matter if there are fifty pages of tree workers in the yellow pages you will still have people come to you.

Again I apologise if anyone thinks I have caused them financial hardship by expanding my business. My aim is to do what I enjoy, make a living and give my customers what they want.

so

are there now too many tree surgeons? Has anything changed in 2 years

I see the business often as an extension to landscape firms (as it has been with us, in fact now comprising a third of our business) who have contacts with large gardens/companies and with a bit of effort/investment can do their own tree work as an add-on service.

No different to general builders I guess.
