a chip on the shoulder is an idiom.

a chip on each or both shoulders is not.

so another - kill two birds with one stone

if someone adapted it to kill three birds with one stone, is it no longer an idiom?

I contend Gareth's chip on both shoulders is still an idiom (as it means something different to an actual chip on each shoulder)

No it's not an idiom as it would be an absolutely pointless idiom achieving and highlighting nothing.

3 birds with one stone would still be an idiom tho.

I'm not clever enough to argue my point, but in this case something tells me that if a chip on tour shoulder means a grudge, then (context dependent) a chip on both shoulders could mean 2 grudges, so a possible idiom

I'll leave the thought of a seesaw for working it out.

something tells me that,   all of the above statement is really clutching at straws. or to put it another way there is indeed more than one chip on a shoulder.

As having a chip on both shoulders is derived from an idiom ( and was meant to mean some kind of cancelling out?) the words were still not taken literally and the meaning was derived from an idiom,so still is one (in my clutching at straws humble opinion)

Definition of idiom from Oxford English Dictionary

a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from the meanings of the individual words.

nobody is questioning the origins, definitions  or meaning of idioms,

what is in question is your interpretation of somebody else's post.

I'll tell you what lets agree to disagree 'cos someone is talking about saws in another post and I'm more interested in that. night.
