To be fair to your bosses, often it's the client who suggests the add ons, they ask the boss who can't refuse (as long as it's reasonable) and he puts it to you.

Beware the client who is walking around looking up while you're having you teabreak!

Yeah that's about right, on my own jobs if the customer wants extras I split the extra money equally with the lads, seems fair if the days money's been made

May sound like a daft question....

Did people find it easier years ago to find employees before the days of face book etc and maybe here?

Less ego and bullrubbish and more drive to work and earn money?

I think maybe you've just had a bad run Chris.

Back in the day, before all this internet etc. Did most people / conpanies communicate? And how did folk find the jobs or work etc?

I advertised for staff in the local paper late nineties, got a really good groundie through it.

The local paper was a touchstone for the community back in Victorian times.

I guess it depended on where you were based. When I left school mid Eighties work was thin on the ground where I was, apart from Government run schemes like YOP's and YTS. I was lucky I had a mate who's dad owned his own building company, so I worked for him.

By the Mid nineties I was working between London and Spain because there was very little work up t'north. Lots of lads I know went to Germany.

Not the conpanies the workers.../QUOTE]

Chris I think most in this trade are sufficiently well connected to know who`s about and available, the subby network is a huge source of extra labour on an as and when basis. I am quite confident between the subby`s I use I could have an extra ten guys here at the drop of a hat. Likewise I was out helping a contractor that had his back to the wall wrap up a job on new years eve and new years day.
