Wire core llanyard

At what girth would you start using a wire core llanyard, and do they work with petzl grillons? thanks

I hardly ever use a wire core and when I do it's with a prussik and on large diameter timber with rough bark and potential snags that make moving a soft lanyard up the stem.

There is no pre determined girth point where a wirecore lanyard use is recommended as its really up to the climber to determine when its use is appropriate.

I know some guys who never use wirecore lanyards,ive rarely used mine.The point of it is its more rigid therefore easier to flip,so with that in mind id say if your having problems spiking up a stem as you cant flip your lanyard then a wirecore would be ideal.

As for the grillion as far as im aware thats a petzl lanyard with a grigri on it,if its the grigri you mean,which is just a fancy rope grab,then id think it would work fine on a flipline but the grigri that comes with the grillion is only safety rated if used on the petzl grillion rope.

More like Petzl insisting that you buy their expensive replacement lanyard rope. It's the same with the Zillon.

If they were to be honest, it has little to do with the actual likelihood of an alternative rope brand failing.

Again, it's how the product achieved its CE mark and EN numbers, as a combined unit. Teufelberger pretty much did the same thing with the CE lanyard.

I only use them on big hairy dirty conifer stems to flip through little bits I've missed with the saw which you try not miss to any way.

I use mine all the time when chogging. I have the crazy cobra type which is quite thin compared to some others. Why don't people like using them?

If I am dismantling a tree I use one. Cannot think of a single good reason why you would not!

I own a couple - 3m for small trees & 5m for the rest

I doubt that you will find many wire core ropes that work well with a grillon. They won't run through the device properly if at all.

 

I only ever used a wire core on dismantles, a 5m covered most jobs.
