chain oil and fish

I was on my way to a job yesterday when I realised I had run out of chain oil, twenty miles to the nearest supplier so stopped at Tesco and bought a couple of litres of rapeseed oil, worked a treat, can it be used permanently or will long term use damage/clog the oiler system?

You can use it long term, no problem. Have been using it exclusively for several years, never any problem. Keep the saws and containers away from mice and rats though....I would suggest if you're going to convert to rapeseed that you flush out the chain oil tanks with white spirits or old petrol first to remove all traces of mineral oil. I don't know if this is actually necessary, but I would imagine that mineral and organic won't mix, and therefore there might be a film of mineral on the tubes, which might possible become a problem down the road....I really don't know, just went with my gut and haven't have any issues.

I tried mixing rapeseed oil with mineral oil. It turned into gel. The saw oiled fine with the gel, but I wouldn't recommend mixing them.

Don't forget to turn up the oil flow to max if you haven't already. Rapeseed oil is thinner than conventional chain oil. It is also cheaper to buy, can be stored over time, and it's better for the environment.
