Husqvarna Chainsaws - to XP or not to XP?

On a recent thread in the forum the question of why would you not buy the XP version of a Husqvarna saw was raised. The obvious answer is price, but price isn't everything, and so here I try and delve into the differences in the saws, and see whether, at least on paper, the budget saw versions make any sense.   What is an XP saw?   Husqvarna offers 2 saws (at least) at each CC size, the 'regular saw, and the XP version. XP stands for Extra Power, and at a basic level offers j

Coriolopsis gallica

Seems to be the season for Coriolopsis gallica. This is a tier of brackets on a living Prunus padus street tree in Hackney. It took me a while to get to the ID since I associate Coriolopsis gallica with deadwood and ash. It is also fruiting in nearby Clissold park on a huge ash log. @treeruss

Guide to classifications of chainsaw protective wear

Chainsaws are extremely dangerous power tools and it’s important for operators to use the right safety gear, otherwise, accidents with chainsaws can result in major injury or death.   It then falls on the employer's responsibility to provide chainsaw operators with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing. Choosing the right PPE, however, entails knowing the regulations behind it and the designs that would fit the job at hand.   EU Classification System For Cha

Compact Bulldog Bone

It is an exciting time for tree climbers.  Equipment and techniques are developing to not only promote safe working practices but to allow you to work smarter and not harder.  The working life expectancy of a climber can be prolonged with hopefully less wear and tear being picked up on the way.   One such development in Arb climbing is the use of SRT climbing systems.  SRT has been used for a number of years for canopy access, borrowing ideas and kit from rock climbing, caving etc. Tra

5 Tips for progressing your arb career after 30...

The UK arb community is a pretty small and specialist group. We really don’t have enough people coming into the industry, let alone moving through it, into the more technical, off the tools roles. We’ve been working in the recruitment side of the tree world for nearly 20 years and have seen a fair amount of change in that time.   What do you think of the following tips? We’d love to know and hear your perspective.   1) Have respect for yourself and your fellow arborists. Hol

Tree Climbing Harnesses: A Buyer's Guide

Accident data collected by the Health and Safety Executive reveals that working at height is the biggest causes of fatalities and major injuries at work in the UK. As an arborist or a forestry worker, your harness is integral to protecting your health and safety. At the same time, it needs to be comfortable and must allow you to do your job.   Choosing a tree climbing harness is an extremely important decision and shouldn’t be taken lightly or just based on the cheapest option. You wil

A Buyer's Guide to Cobra Bracing

Arborists often need to provide structural support for trees through the use of either fibre ropes or steel cables to secure the stability of the major elements of the tree. There are several different approaches to bracing a tree but the Cobra System is one of the most popular and best. It is easy to install, will cater to many different types of defects and instabilities, does not require any specialist tools or training, and is completely non-invasive to the tree. Climbing The Ladder When You're Tired of Climbing Trees

With 20 years' experience in the industry, we are well aware that there comes a time in every climbing arborists' life that being up trees for a living becomes harder.   Often that moment is what pre-empts the conversation we then have with climbers about next steps but it pays to think about this before that moment arrives.    There are several ways that experienced climbers and groundsmen can advance their careers. There are lots of options, whether it's going on to become

Tree Surveys and Tree Tags

All arborists will invariably carry out tree surveys from time to time. They can be conducted on land owned by public sector bodies or on private estates. They ensure that the individual or organisation managing the land has the correct information that they need to make decisions regarding how they will manage the tree stock.   There is official guidance, namely British Standard BS5837, which sets out how decisions should be made when managing trees. A tree survey is needed before any

T540i XP

It could be argued that February 2020 was not the perfect time to be launching a ‘game-changing’ new product, but that being said, Husqvarna’s latest battery saw appears to have hit the stores with only a couple of months delay.   I appreciate that for many, now is not the time to be splashing out on ‘experimental purchases’, but for anyone who has taken the plunge, what are your real-world-experiences of the T540i so far?   It’s a while since I used a petrol 540 (although it

Hornbeam Tree - (Carpinus betulus)

The Hornbeam Tree (Carpinus betulus), is a tough a tree as any. It is both beautiful and useful with leaf cover all year round, making it a haven for a lot of wildlife through the winter months.   The Hornbeam is also known as the common hornbeam or European hornbeam and it is a native species from the Betulaceae family. When hornbeam trees reach maturity, they can be as high as 30 metres. They can also live for over 300 years.   What do Hornbeam Trees Look Like? Th

Small update on my career change.   I never know if anyone cares but here I am... Forestry Winching Training

Could anyone please direct me to some useful reading on winching techniques and training.  I'm looking to purchase a slightly older double drum winch to extract wind blows from around the estate which came down during the winter for chipping my own biomass.  (Valtra with Jake and crane, Heizohack, forwarding trailer).  I have a pretty good idea of where its at for my low output needs but would like a little theoretical night time reading.   Thanks in advance
