which clinometer??

Hi all,

just looking to purchase a clinometer, but not sure on which to buy.

Sunnto have 2 different models, pm5/360 and pm5/1520

 

which one is better for tree heights??

Tried this out already on a few trees. Cheap as chips and works. Don't know how accurate and professional you need it though.

The Suunto ones come with a variety of different scales and info on them. One just gives you an angle reading so you have to use a conversion table to find the height. The best one in my experience gives actual readings of the height on scales that depend how far you are stood from the tree. Eg one scale gives heights when you are 20m away, one gives heights when you are 25m away etc. That makes it easy because you just need to accurately pace out a set distance from the tree each time to get an instant height reading.

 

I've got a Haglof digital clinonmeter which is better again as its smaller, lighter and gives you a height that already takes your own height in to consideration.

When I worked on NG, we had a nice laser that worked it all out for you; didn't really matter where you stood distance-wise. Think it was an impulse laser:confused1:

If you can afford it, buy the TruPulse; it measures your distance and works out the height of the tree from two angles plus many other attributes - makes life a lot easier.

 

I've also used the Haglof digital clinometer which is great but requires you to measure the distance you're away from the subject tree, as you would need to do with the Suunto.

I had a go with a good one, from memory I think was called a laser ace.

As others have said buy the best you can afford, really you don't want to be messing about measuring distances and working stuff out in the field if you can help it.

Andrew the only problem with the tru-pulse is that you have to keep looking through the eyepiece to read off the data whereas with the impulse laser it is on a display at the rear also the impulse is more accurate than the trupulse hence why NG preferred the readings from the impulse for measurements.

think the leaser measures are out of my price range.

will be a sunnto I think. just not sure which model to buy
