After using a Maculloch chainsaw for a couple of years ( we all start somewhere ) I've decided to treat myself to a upgrade, I have two in mind a Husky 550XP and the Stihl MS 271, I think they're priced similar and intend to handle them before I buy, going by the posts I have read on the subject, either should be suitable for small time logging to keep a stove fed, I always like to get something with a bit in reserve, am I on the right track with these two ?

550xp is a pro saw, better build quality, more power, better saw!

Out of the two you are thinking of I would pick the 550 purely for the reason that I'm a husqy man and own one so know how good it is but as suggested, take a look at the echo and dolmar saws, I can't vouch for dolmar but I do have echo's smallest top handle and it's a great little saw plus I've heard a lot of good about some of the mid range saws

not long bought a jonsered 2253 basically a husqvarna 550 but better looking:thumbup: slightly cheaper than husky but just as good paid about 440 i think

Got an old jonny 630 super2 of a guy on here, great machine, a bit heavy but a solid cutting saw.
