  1. Used engine oil/gear oil. Get about 5-6 months out of a bar before it opens up on the rails. Good going I’d say.
  2. Aye. Getting better, where I’m working just now is 4 seasons in one day. Was mental winds and hail/snow in the morning then blue skies and rain in the late morning.
  3. IMG_6307.mov IMG_6306.mov IMG_6288.mov IMG_6286.mov
  4. I have a long shank 461 brushcutter which I bought last year and I’m 6’6 and I’d say it’s a bit overkill
  5. I guess everything is learnable over time. I wouldn’t be buying it to use it solely for my own chains more so other peoples. I think a guy near me charges 4-5 pound per chain on one of these I think.
  6. Earn a decent living I guess. Always on the look out for making more I guess. Next tax year I want to be investing in something worthwhile, had my fair share of buying stupid things (like loads and loads of Huskys)
  7. Not sure why but this forum is very slow for me on my iPhone. Not sure if it’s the 10 or so ads below each page that will be slowing it down. Can’t upload a 20mb video to my page for some reason, uploads at a snails pace when it never used to maybe a few months ago.
  8. Worth mentioning, machine operators at the same company got no fuel money extra, nothing for food and had to pay there own digs or stay in there caravan. In exchange they got a better tonneage rate which I would say is the absolute minimum
  9. Who are you forwarding for? I’ve cut up north and at it’s peak it was day rate, plus 50. Plus dinner (ended up being about 20/30 quid for dinner) as it really takes it out of you working school hours on a saw. Really works up an appetite. It’s different in a machine I’d say though as it’s harder to find saw men willing to go far. It’s mental expensive in some bits up north, and sometimes it’s only really petrol stations (shitty expensive ones at that) that you end up eating out of for your breakfast/lunch. I could easily spend 20 quid at them and still be starving.
  10. Looking at maybe buying one of these in the next few months. After this tax year is done, end of the month. Anyone used one of these? It does all aspects, rakers etc. Markusson Sensomatic | Clark Engineering WWW.CLARK-ENGINEERING.COM Markusson Sensomatic. We seek to provide the highest quality products to our customers that match the unforgiving and... Ideally would like to start sharpening harvester chains/processor chains in my free time/in the garage. Heard people charging 4-5 pound plus VAT per chain.

  12. A wee log splitting job, woodland clear up kind of thing. Took me and my father 10 hours or so to cut, shift it all about 30-40 metres down a track in a wheel barrow to the splitting area and split it. Few other odds and ends done as well for a nice local woman. What a difference to working in commercial forestry.
  13. Think it’ll be 400 metres if not more. Some will be handfelled and some felled by the Menzi Muck off a traction winch and left out for chokering.
  14. A guy I cut with recently switched 462 to .325 for a 20 inch bar and says it is absolutely unreal for snedding.
  15. Bill. Give me a message and I’ll put you on to a fella. My last EXL 3/8 reel was 370 including VAT.

  17. Here’s a few from the past month or so. Done a few 4-500 ton clearfells by hand. Hardwood thinnings and now skylining. IMG_6161.mov IMG_6162.mov IMG_6148.mov IMG_6117.mov AB7A6D87-03D5-4C1F-A889-4CE6FFC21043.mov IMG_6074.mov IMG_6023.mov IMG_6021.mov IMG_5965.mov
  18. Small, medium and big. Windblow also. I started on 140 running my own van and now I wouldn’t cut commercially for any less than 250 a day. You will need around about 3K in kit I’d say to get you the basics. Plus own reliable van. Prepare to drive a lot, some days I can do 200 miles a day plus a shift which usually takes my days well over 12 hours a day. (I charge more for this but it’s still not worth it by any means). It’s expensive, shitty job most of the time but the days when it’s good and everything is working well brings out the love for the job. Every cutter will say the same. Saw advice would be to leave the 500i at home and get a decent 70cc saw that won’t drink the can within 4 hours of cutting edge trees and snedding. You’d be lucky to get digs paid for if you are starting out, but depending on where you are there should be loads of local work. My phone rings daily for cutting work, most I’ve had in one night has been 6 phone calls for the next days work but you can’t please everybody. Don’t buy into the Treeman’s jack bollocks at 1000 pound a piece. 50 quid Hilka 20 ton jack and a plate will do the same job and if it breaks then it breaks. Can give you pointers on wedges, axes and what saw would be a good all rounder if you need Here’s my insta of the stuff I do if you want an insight Jake Donaghy (@jdforestry_) • Instagram reel WWW.INSTAGRAM.COM 57 likes, 0 comments - jdforestry_ on January 31, 2025
  19. 2 hours drive and a days work? I remember my first part time job… haha.
  20. Aye or hinge up or down. Was hoping someone had made something like this before or something similar.
  21. Brackets would be just below the wire mesh either side etc.
  22. Been working for a tractor trailer set up for a bit now and known the owner well. We do all aspects of forestry production, 4-500 ton clearfell spruce being our biggest job. Everything cut by hand and shifted with the Jake Crane on the tractor etc. Operator holds tree up with crane whilst I work the tree/sned and cross cut and he stacks. Randomly came to mind but instead of holding the tree, there could be a bracket on each side of this winch where you can rest butt of the tree on and give the crane some slack as holding a full tree in the crane will surely wear it out over time? Anybody ever seen or done this before? I’ve heard of people doing it with skidders.
  23. Never ran or started bought off of Crocky or Ian Gregory in March. Scottish Borders. Up for 1100.
  24. Here is my 4 day old 550 mk2 and this is how I have to unstick the pull start (never in my 2 years softwood cutting have I experienced this so quick). Kill switch is also tempermental straight out the box. Saw is flying though IMG_5731.mov
  25. A million times better. Will get some more videos of everything in the next few weeks.
