Unpopular opinion: young people should be encouraged to work unpleasantly long hours for shitty employers so they can get a taste of what hard work is. Only after a few years of that are they allowed to even think about a 6-8 hour day.

A bit of clarification please, who are you asking these questions to? Your neighbour, or the arborist doing the job? Who is paying for your trees to be removed, you or the neighbour? Keep the cherry, it makes great BBQ wood, ask the lads to block it up for you and they shouldn't complain. Keep it dry for 2 years, work away. Alternatively, carvers like cherry wood green (fresh cut) for making spoons and such. You might find a group near to you on Facebook. You will not make any money off it though... but see if you can swing a free spoon or two. Edit: I agree with Mick, the neighbour's "German pine" is in the wrong place, and I say that as someone who believes in keeping trees in situ if at possible.

Failing pots that do air pruning, deep pots are best. I like the 5 litre rose pots for trees that don't need anything bigger. They'll last a couple of years at least in a 5l, until you find their forever home.

Predictably enough, being a smelly hippy, personally I wouldn't bother. Just snip any growth with a pair of secateurs until there isn't. It isn't knotweed you're trying to kill.

Back in that cooold snap in 2012, we had about a week of -25°c down in the valley. One particular petrol station either forgot to up the dosage or got delivered the wrong product, but we and hundreds of other diesel users suddenly found ourselves losing power, slowing down, coasting to the side of the road... with gellified fuel. Pretty funny times, in retrospect.

I had a few big stumps in the way of the house when we were building, our digger driver did 2 things: dug a big hole, dropped the stumps in, smashed them down and buried them... And for one big willow stump in the middle of a patch of daub, just pressed it down... down... down it went, and the grey semi-liquid clay just closed in on top of it by itself. Very impressive to watch.

Well Stere, check the other stump thread at the moment... is the whole stump really removed if you've only ground it down to 10-15cm below the surface? Depending on what is being done with the space after the stumps are gone, just grinding might not be good enough. Grass or a flower bed or left to nature, fine... replanting big trees, or putting in parking or a patio, or burying a water pipe... not fine.

Morning. Was supposed to be subbing for a guy today and tomorrow, but he has the lurgy and postponed until next Thursday Friday. So I'll move Monday's job to tomorrow, and take the dogs for a long walk up the mountain today instead. Everybody wins!

I have four puff pastry parcels in the oven; mushroom, onion, goat cheese, various herbs and spices. For lunch for the wife and I tomorrow: one for her, three for me. Back in my music festival days, the outfit I was with sometimes did a loaded mac'n'cheese stand in addition to the backstage catering. Optional toppings included the crispy onions you have there, shredded bacon, jalapeños, sweetcorn, chopped coriander and, occasionally, lobster tails.

There isn't a market for it yet, but tree stumps should be a valued resource for any beardy-weirdy gardening types offering habitat creation and rewilding and the like. A roots-akimbo tree stump next to a brand-new wildlife pond is peak garden aesthetic right now.

Blobs of choux pastry, deep fried instead of baked, tossed in sugar. I used to serve a savoury version by beating in soft goat's cheese to the raw choux pastry dough before frying it.
